| 1 cup | chopped pitted dates | 250 mL |
| 1 cup | boiling water | 250 mL |
| 2 1/3 cups | all-purpose flour | 550 mL |
| 4 tsp | baking powder | 20 mL |
| 1/4 tsp | baking soda | 1 mL |
| 1 tsp | salt | 5 mL |
| 3/4 cup | sugar | 175 mL |
| 1 cup | old Cheddar cheese, grated | 250 mL |
| 1 | egg, well beaten | 1 |
| 1 tbsp | vegetable oil | 15 mL |
Preheat oven to 325°F/160°C.
Grease a loaf pan, about 9 x 5 x 3-in/23 x 13 x 8-cm.
Put dates in a bowl and pour water over them; let stand 5 minutes.
In another bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Add Cheese and toss with a fork until thoroughly mixed.
Add egg and oil to date mixture; stir well. Make a well in dry ingredients. Pour date mixture into the well; stir just enough to dampen dry ingredients.
Turn batter into pan. Bake approximately 55 minutes or until top is browned and loaf has slightly pulled away from the pan.
